Why Obama Should Pardon Snowden Now

THOUGHTS ON LIBERTY AND SECURITY IN THE USA

The Libertarian Shaman

Over the last few years I have written extensively on issues pertaining to Liberty in the United States. What started out as a small hobby has been consuming passion for me.

One of the most important issues pertains to the American government’s spying on and surveillance efforts against it’s own citizens. This is why the damning information Edward Snowden brought to light is of paramount importance.

Snowden, a fugitive from the American criminal system, has been charged in his absence with the illegal communication of national defense information, and willful communication of classified intelligence to an unauthorized person (June 2013).

Edward Joseph Snowden (born June 21, 1983) is a former American computer and technology expert, former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, and former contractor for the federal government who copied and leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013 without prior authorization. His disclosures revealed numerous global surveillance programs, many run by the NSA and Five Eyes with the cooperation of telecommunication companies and European governments.

Snowden was hired by Booz Allen Hamilton, an NSA contractor, in 2013 after previous employment with Dell and the CIA. On May 20, 2013, Snowden flew to Hong Kong after leaving his job at an NSA facility in Hawaii and in early June he revealed thousands of classified NSA documents to journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras and Ewen MacAskill.

Snowden came to international attention after stories based on the material appeared in The Guardian and The Washington Post. Further disclosures were made by other newspapers including Der Spiegel and The New York Times.

On June 21, 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed charges against Snowden of two counts of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property.

On June 23, Snowden fled via plane to Moscow, Russia, where he reportedly remained for over a month. Later that summer, Russian authorities granted him one-year asylum, which was later extended to three years. As of 2015, he was still living in an undisclosed location in Russia while seeking asylum elsewhere.

I believe Snowden has done an invaluable service to the American people in showing how extensively our private information is being stored and processed by the American government.

In out country’s alleged quest to keep us “safe” from terrorists and other bad people, America has become a virtual technological police state where the bulk collection of our personal meta data is a common every day occurrence.

Snowden’s revelations to the world show that that the freedom and privacy we thought we have are figments our fertile imaginations.

THE REALITY IS, OUR OWN GOVERNMENT IS SPYING ON US THROUGH AN EXTENSIVE SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM.

EDWARD SNOWDEN SHOWED THAT PRIVACY IS A SHAM IN THE UNITED STATES.

Snowden has been called a hero, a whistleblower, a dissident, a patriot, and a traitor. His exposing of this information have generated tremendous debates over mass surveillance, government secrecy, and the balance between national security and information privacy.

I say Edward Snowden is a true Ameircan hero that needs to be pardoned and praised for exposing one of the most colossal scandals in the history of the world.

SNOWDEN SHOWED THAT NO ONE IS SAFE FROM THE SURVEILLANCE STATES OF THIS WORLD.
